Google farewells AdSense video units

Published 03/31/2009
Google has announced that after reviewing its AdSense video units feature, which allows publishers to show YouTube content and ads on their pages, they found that it hasn't had the impact they'd had hoped for.   Google will retire the feature at the end of April in order to "focus our resources on other opportunities to help publishers earn from their sites".

Google has asked those publishers currently displaying the video ad units to begin removing them from their pages. Accounts will be credited with any earnings made from the units. From the end of April any leaderboard or skyscraper video units remaining on pages will direct visitors to YouTube and other video unit sizes will automatically convert to standard embedded YouTube players, but these will not generate any revenue.

Google-Yahoo! deal goes ahead

Published 06/16/2008

"Clearly, it's time to move on." said Jerry Yang, chief executive of Yahoo, as his company announced it had ended talks with Microsoft and agreed instead to a partnership with Google.

The alliance between the two search companies will put Google ads alongside Yahoo's search results and on other web pages in the US and Canada. The arrangement with Google will add about $US800 million a year to sales, Yahoo! said.

The companies will delay implementing the program, which covers search results in the US and Canada, to give the US Justice Department time to review it.

Microsoft abandons bid for Yahoo!

Published 05/4/2008

Microsoft has dropped its bid to buy Yahoo because the two sides cannot agree on an acceptable sale price. Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer formally withdrew the offer in a letter to Yahoo chief executive Jerry Yang.

Mr Ballmer said Microsoft had raised its original offer from $44.6bn to $47.5bn (£24.1bn) - $33 per share. But he added that Yahoo had insisted on at least $53bn, or $37 a share - more than Microsoft was prepared to pay.

We paid the $150.00 fee to have traffic directed to
www.lowcarbmart.com in mid April. We have yet to see ANY traffic
directed to our site. I guess the $500.00 customers take
priority? See the copy of the email I recently sent and the reply
that follows and see what you think:

On 5/14/02 you wrote:

It's been nearly 5 months since you completed the optimization of
www.quickerweightloss.com. I have yet to see any traffic directed
to my site. Quickerweightloss.com appears to be just a copy of
the old homepage of lowcarbmart.com. I can't even find that the
site has been indexed by any search engine. I was expecting a
little more for the money I paid. Any idea when I might expect
traffic?

.....and the reply

Yes, I know you have really waited long and I understand that you
have been very patient with us till now. Please allow me to
explain this unexpected delay in getting you the desired hits.

We had completed submission for your site quite sometime ago.
However, some search engines, INCLUDING GOOGLE, have recently
changed their algorithms. To keep pace, naturally we had to go
into a lot of research and the good news is, we have come up with
some very good techniques for the proprietary link popularity
work we normally do for all our projects. This had resulted in an
unforeseen change in our schedule.

Please bear with us a little more, because if you quit now, all
our good work will go to waste. Right now, we are working at
your project, and it's only a question of another one and half
months till the search engines spider your site and it starts
getting good ranks and rich traffic.

The moment your site starts receiving traffic, I will get back to
you with the full particulars.

Please be with us till then,

Thanks,
Aparna Ganguly

Keep in mind that we paid for the service in April and no one has
contacted us about the status until I recently emailed them. The
major PPC's may be more expensive, but at least you know what
you're paying for.

Subject: Update #029 -- 1stSearchRanking.com -- Are you getting traffic at 5 cents per visitor?

Hi Nathan,

In response to your request in update #029, here are my
experiences with http://www.1stsearchranking.com.

I placed 4 orders with 1stSearchRanking for a total of more than
$2000. My decision to place these orders was because their
company had received glowing recommendations from Allan Gardyne
amongst others. I was also impressed by their competitive
pricing, guarantees, affiliate program and not least by the
wealth of useful content on their web site.

Of the four orders I placed, two were for optimization placed
August and September 2001 for my web sites
http://www.domainsnow4u.com and http://www.1stdebtconsolidation4u.com.

The other two orders were for the "pay-per-click" plan at these
sites they created:
http://www.web-site-designing-tips.com order placed 17th March 2002.
http://www.internet-marketing-ebook.com order placed 24th March 2002.

Summary:
Despite promises in April 2002 to "expect to see an increase in
traffic to your site in about 2.5 - 3 months", no traffic has
materialized to date. When I queried this long delay, I was
given a vague reply in a message dated 9th September 2002 (detail
below).

Here's the timeline of how these two campaigns progressed with
quotes from emails received...

http://www.web-site-designing-tips.com
2nd April -- "...expect to see an increase in traffic to your
site in about 2.5 - 3 months from now."

29th April -- "We will upload the pages as soon as we have
completed the optimization of the site."

22nd May -- "We will upload your pages by Mid June."

15th July -- "The pages are ready. We will only have to upload
the pages in a few days."

8th September -- I wrote: "I am concerned because...more than 5
months(!!!) since your email (2nd April), and the Hitbox stats
show ZERO search engine traffic. Also my Google search bar shows
www.web-site-designing-tips.com as "not ranked by Google". Please
let me know the reason for the long delay and when you will start
getting the top rankings in the search engines which you promised
in your email dated 2nd April 2002?

9th September -- "There has been a major change in the algorithms
of the Search Engines and this has in a way caused a delay in the
sites getting spidered and ranked in time. What we thought
earlier was that the site would get ranked within the time span
we had foreseen. Now it's taking a little more time than it was
scheduled to take."

2nd October -- I wrote: "When can I expect to start seeing
traffic to my sites?". Reply is awaited.

What traffic am I getting?
Until today: zero traffic.

http://www.internet-marketing-ebook.com
11th April -- "...expect to see an increase in traffic to your
site in about 2.5 - 3 months from now."

23rd May -- "we have finished page optimization for the site."

16th July 2002 -- "we have completed submitting site to the
search engines."

What traffic am I getting?
Until today: zero traffic. However I have started receiving a
small amount of traffic thanks to my own paid submission to
Inktomi.

To complete your information, here is my experience of their
optimization services for the 2 orders I placed in August and
September 2001 for my web sites http://www.domainsnow4u.com and
http://www.1stdebtconsolidation4u.com.

Summary:
My experience with 1stSearchRanking has been rather painful, to
say the least...lateness in replying to emails, unfulfilled
promises, lack of credible answers to queries......and
culminating in one of my web sites being dropped by Google
followed by 1stSearchranking unilaterally deciding to discontinue
an agreed maintenance plan despite my protests to the contrary.

If this sounds extraordinary to you I can assure you I find it
difficult to believe myself -- sometimes I have to pinch myself
to make sure I'm not dreaming and then re-read my file with them
:-(

I notice their extensive use of invisible links (transparent
gifs) both in their optimization and ppc plans. These links are
usually placed at the bottom of the web pages. In addition to
invisible links within a web site I have evidence that they are
additionally inter-linking many or all of their ppc sites
together. Can extensive invisible linking lead to being
penalized by the s/e's??

Detail:
The optimization for http://www.1stdebtconsolidation4u.com took
much longer than the promised 5 months and never produced more
than about 20 daily uniques, way too low to earn enough to
finance their $149 per month maintenance plan. They re-submitted
all the pages and traffic increased a little. Then they suggested
I sign up for their maintenance plan but confusingly, only a
couple of days later, they came back to me saying they had weeks
previously signed up another debt consolidation site and
consequently couldn't accept mine. Just as well perhaps...!

The optimization for my other site, http://www.domainsnow4u.com,
initially worked much better gaining me high rankings for popular
keywords (e.g. No.1 at Google for "cheap domains") in spring
2002. Then my site's link popularity at Google began to slip.
In about early June 2002 I emailed them a copy of a monthly link
popularity report I regularly receive from
http://www.webmasteraid.com/ to alert them to the steep decline
in my link popularity but I received no response until about a
month later. By then (early July), http://www.domainsnow4u.com
was dropped by Google. And as a direct result my web traffic and
income plunged to about half!

However, at almost exactly the same time I noticed that
http://www.1stsearchranking.com had also been dropped by Google!!
My Google-bar showed a "not-ranked" PR for 1stsearchranking.com
which incidentally has continued all through July, August and
September. I monitored almost every day. Only at the end of
September 2002 did PR for 1stsearchranking.com change to 0/10.

I naturally took these matters up with 1stSearchRanking but the
culmination of a number of exchanges was a unilateral decision by
them to cancel my maintenance plan for http://www.domainsnow4u.com
because, according to them, I no longer had confidence in their
services. My protests were to no avail -- they insisted on
cancellation whilst admitting that in the circumstances they
understood my wish to continue.

Conclusion:
As of today, my site http://www.domainsnow4u.com remains not
indexed by Google. I emailed them in August very politely
requesting them to re-index my site in line with what they write
on their page: http://www.google.com/webmasters/2.html#B1 ...but
so far no luck :-(
Any useful advice as to what I can do to try to get Google to re-
index my site would be very welcome.

Best regards.
Fred Bunzl

P.S.
Some research and monitoring I have done reveals:
http://www.1stsearchranking.com had a Google PR "not ranked"
between about early July and end September 2002. Since end
September 2002 their Google PR is 0/10.

According to WHOIS, my 2 ppc sites are hosted by:
http://www.ecohostnet.com/
http://www.tmshosting.com/
Neither of which appear to be indexed/ranked by Google.

Subject: Re: [PayPerClickSearchEngines.com] Pay Per Click Search Engines Update #029

Hi Nathan,

The jury is still out as far as my situation is concerned. I
paid $1000.00 for two sites (10,000.00 unique visitors per site).
It has now been six months or so. I have finally approved the
doorway pages for one site. They are still working on the pages
for my second site. The pages for the first site have not been
uploaded. I am supposed to have a URL to a tracking site to view
my statistics--I do not have it!

I am still hopeful that they are just extremely slow and that it
will work out to my benefit? I contracted them because of Mr.
Roy's good reputation. However, I am having doubts. At best, they
are not productive and time conscience. Their work should not
take six months to a year to complete.

To:
Subject: Sumantra Roy's 5 cent per visitor offer

Hi Nathan,

You asked regarding Sumantra Roy's pay-per-click service...

After reading a recommendation from Allan Gardyne of
AssociatePrograms.com...someone whose opinion I value and
trust...I became very interested in this offer. After visiting
www.1stSearchRanking.com, Sumantra Roy's web site, I was sold...I
paid $500 for the service.

That was in March....it is now October, a full seven months
later. Yet, there has been absolutely NO traffic whatsoever
generated. Yes, Sumantra's team DID build the web page that was
supposed to link to my web site, as promised (although it took
over a month), but it is not listed with ANY search engine,
directory, or anywhere else.

I have maintained regular contact with both Sumantra and his team
in an attempt to keep things moving along. And, while he is
always very polite and apologetic, the fact remains that not one
visitor has come to my site nor has the site been listed in ANY
search engine to date. In fact, unless it happened this week,
Sumantra maintains that the site they built hasn't even been
crawled yet...a matter I can't understand.

At this point, my patience has nearly gone and I am greatly
disappointed. Sumantra Roy may, indeed, have a good reputation,
and he seems to be a very nice man. But...I wonder if he can
truly deliver his promises. My company is new, small, and
survives on a shoestring budget. Any investment made must be done
carefully and with the expectation of a return on the investment.
To date, the return is a big zero.

My intention for contacting you is not to bring any harm to
Sumantra or reflect a bad light on him. It is simply that I am
interested in knowing about the experiences of others who have
dealt with him. If I am to form an opinion of his services, I
must know of a broad range of experiences to draw from. Its my
sincere hope that my experience is the exception and not the
rule.

Wishing you all the best,

Yes - I signed up for Sumantra deal. Paid the $500. Took along
time to get the page up. His server has that the page is located
has been down for several months. Basically I have not gotten
any leads.

Haven't gotten my money back either.

Sumantra Roy's response:

Nathan,

Ever since we launched the pay per click program a few months
back, we seem to have been faced with severe operational problems
one after the other. Not in my wildest dream (or nightmare, as it
turned out to be) could I have imagined that the pay per click
program would be as popular as it turned out to be. When we
launched the program, we simply did not have the infrastructure
and the human resources necessary to cope up with the inflow of
orders, even after we increased the initial deposit required for
the pay per click program from $150 to $500. This delayed the
process of creating the new web sites for our customers
considerably.

In order to cope up with the level of demand, we had to hire new
employees and move into new offices, which initially seemed to
worsen the problem because most of my time and the time of the
more senior employees in our company was spent in training the
new employees in our company. However, after a few weeks, we
finally managed to bring things under control and were able to
clear the backlog of orders.

Given these delays, I had expected that the sites created under
the pay per click program would start receiving traffic by the
end of September. However, as luck would have had it, Google went
through a major change right at the end of September because of
which the sites did not receive the rankings that I had expected.

All this is not meant to be an excuse for the lack of results so
far - simply an explanation as to why it happened. I can quite
understand that our customers have paid us to achieve results for
them regardless of the unforeseen problems that we face in doing
so - that is exactly what I would expect from any person or
company I am a customer of.

In the meantime, a few of our customers have asked us for a
refund of the deposit that they have made to us. In all such
cases, we have promptly refunded them.

We are now in the process of re-optimizing all the sites keeping
in mind the changes made by Google. We are absolutely determined
to ensure that our customers start getting the top rankings
latest by December, possibly sooner.

The last few months have been by far the most trying, stressful
and painful months in my life - however, we are still confident
of ultimately delivering the results that we had promised to our
customers.

Best Regards,
Sumantra Roy,
