1. GenieKnows: Interview with a CEO
===================================

John Manning, CEO of GenieKnows.com, has been kind enough to answer a couple of questions. Which will help us understand what he and his company are doing to make GenieKnows not only worth advertising on, but one you'd be crazy not to.

GenieKnows has been around as a metacrawler for around 4 years now, but converted to a pay per click search engine a couple of months ago. It is currently offering a $25 signup bonus when you deposit $50 or more into your account.

First off I asked him what makes GenieKnows different from the rest?

John: There are a number of features that sets Genieknows apart from the crowd of PPC's out there. One of the most positively received features is our rich "Featured Content" of information that people find "useful, informative, and interesting"; because more and more people are coming to our site for information as well as searches, our advertisers are finding that their products and services that relate
to our content have a higher ROI since, in a real way the users are "pre-qualified" by their interest in certain content areas.

Through our content we are also able to write specific articles for and about advertisers and include their links in the articles thus raising their ROI even higher.They are even able to advertise in our content articles.

The ever growing Genieknows.com network is currently doing about 3.5 million searches per day. We are able to geo-target by countries as well. We have been around for 4 years now, having stared out as a metacrawler dealing with a large broad base of traffic from 26 search engines prior to becoming a PPV(Pay Per Visit) in Sept of 2003.

Me: What methods do you employ to keep your product different and to stay one step ahead of the others?

John: We offer a superior reporting system, second to none, that allows the advertisers to track clicks and traffic in real time 24/7 as often as they choose; this allows the advertisers to see the number of clicks they have received, the number valid clicks for and the number of invalid clicks, for which they do not pay even if those clicks generate sales leads. We are able to compete with other PPC's with our minimum bid of 1 penny, and our personal care and service.

We already have many clients that maintain thousands of keywords using Excel Spread Sheets saving time and money. One client successfully uploading 16,500 keywords, spread between 631 separate listings.

We maintain a system of contact with advertisers within 4 hours of receiving a communication during the regular business day. In addition we have a policy of CRM that insures that each advertiser has contact with his GenieKnows account manager at least once every three weeks.

Me: What steps are you taking to ensure your advertisers will continue to receive good quality traffic, and a good quantity of traffic to their sites?

John: There is an effective and robust fraud detection system in place to assure the quality of traffic is high; these are both real time and off line manual checks.

Our Business Development team is constantly searching out sources of legitimate web site traffic so our advertisers get the best.

We are pro-active in our relationship with our advertisers, not reactive or avoiding. We pride ourselves on being available either by email or directly by telephone. Many of our clients are using our new toll free number to keep in touch with us and manage their accounts.

We continue to conduct research with the leading Canadian Universities (Dalhousie, Simon Fraser and University of Toronto) to improve the quality of our searching techniques.

If you're in the Chicago area or are attending the Search Engine Strategies conference there in December this year, you might have noticed that GenieKnows is a premium sponsor of the event.

I'm sure John or any of his staff would be happy to talk more about his new pay per click search engine to current and potential advertisers who are attending.

2. Ah-ha raises minimum bid
===========================

I suppose it eventually has to happen with all the major pay per click search engines, and Ah-ha has finally increased its minimum bid. Although, the new minimum bid of 3 cents is still better than 5, or 10 cents.

Ah-ha says that due to its expanded network of distribution partners, and various other considerations, it is raising the minimum bid for all new listings starting December 1 this year.

It will also introduce the popular "grandfather period" where-by bids below the new minimum will remain un-changed. Bids below 3 cents won't be affected unless you change your bid during the grandfather period.

3. Sprinks acquired by Google
=============================

Sprinks advertisers may have received a rude awakening when they tried to log into their accounts. If your Sprinks account has run out of funds, you won't be able to log in, ever again.

As announced on October 24, Sprinks has been acquired by Google and advertising on Sprinks will be replaced by Google AdWords over the next month or so.

Sprinks says that you'll be able access your account until your funds are depleted or until November 28, whichever comes first. It says on November 29, 2003, the Sprinks advertising system will be discontinued and your ads will cease to run.

4. Apologies, corrections and FindWhat bonus offer
==================================================

In last month's Update Newsletter I mentioned a deal that FindWhat was offering to subscribers. The offer I described was incorrect and I am solely responsible for the misunderstanding. Sorry for any confusion.

The correct offer is actually a $5 bonus when you deposit $25 or more into a new account at FindWhat. This offer is still current and available to anyone who signs up for a new account using this URL:
