1. Yahoo! acquiring Overture
============================
The big news this month has been Yahoo!'s acquisition of Overture. If you haven't already heard, this will probably come as a shock to you.
Yahoo! paid $1.63 billion in cash and stock for Overture on Monday July 14. For each Overture shareholders will receive 0.6108 of a Yahoo! share plus $4.75 in cash for each Overture share held.
What does this mean for Overture advertisers? Probably not a lot. There has been a lot of speculation that Overture will lose MSN as a distribution partner sooner or later because of the acquisition, but in the long run I doubt it will affect advertisers a whole lot.
Obviously Overture results will be integrated into Yahoo! a lot more in order to increase revenue and replace the MSN traffic, if/when that deal is lost.
Danny Sullivan of SearchEngineWatch said, and I agree, that because MSN has such a large audience, advertisers will use whatever means necessary to have their site listed there. Whether MSN offers in-house pay per click advertising, through Overture or via another
partnership.
There's a good look at the whole picture by Danny here on his site:
