1. Overture buys AltaVista and FAST
===================================

In the last week or so Overture has announced plans that it would be buying AltaVista and FAST.

Overture said the acquisition of AltaVista reinforces its commitment to search and providing advertisers with new ways to connect with potential customers.

Mostly I have been reading a lot of people suggesting that this is somewhat a bad movie for Overture as it will be competing with its own distribution partners.

Though it may or may not be detrimental to any large distribution deals Overture has with other search sites, if done correctly, Overture can use these search entities to bolster its traffic and quality at a reduced cost.

The big advantage to owning AltaVista and FAST, and any other search network, is that it is creating its own distribution network. Overture will have complete control over all, or a vast majority of, the traffic it is supplying to advertisers.

If executed successfully, this will mean not having to share revenue with partners. Though I doubt it would ever happen, it is possible that Overture could afford to lower the minimum bids if this were the case.
