1. Generic search still tops
============================

There's an interesting article in the January issue of the Overture Advertiser Newsletter.

According to a study carried out for Overture by comStore Networks, generic search terms are used more often than expected.

The study analyzed the timing of search engine usage and the role of different search term categories in the shopping process among consumers searching for electronics and computer products.

It found that generic product search terms (e.g. "camera") made up more than 70% of total search volume, while trade-marked retailer terms accounted for 20% of total search volume, and specific product terms made up 10% of total search volume.

These findings suggest that retailers who invest solely in product-specific keywords will fail to reach a large percentage of searchers. While the findings are confined to the consumers searching for electronic and computer products it's highly likely
that search for other products will show a similar pattern.

Diane Rinaldo, director of strategic alliances at Overture says, "This research supports the theory that all types of terms play an important role in influencing the consumer's purchase decision. With this new knowledge, marketers take a major step toward better understanding the full impact of their search advertising campaigns".

Update:  Overture is no more. It's been replaced by Yahoo! Search Marketing. Sign up and get a $50 free credit towards advertising.

2. Fraudsters still clicking away
===================================

People new to pay per click advertising are sometimes hesitant about beginning campaigns because they don't really know how the systems work, or they're afraid they'll end up spending large amounts of money for little return.

There are many pay per click search engines that offer new advertisers free advertising credits or bonuses for signing up.While an advertiser is unlikely to get much traffic from the smaller or newer PPC search engines individually, running
campaigns in several can result in significant amounts of traffic. It can be a good way of "testing the waters".

Of course, the small PPC search engines don't usually have all the bells and whistles that the big boys do, but I think they're worth trying out.

I've just started a new category in the directory, listing the PPC search engines which give free advertising credits or offer bonuses to new advertisers.

It's a very new category and so far I've only listed 24 search engines. There are dozens yet to be added so to speed the process up I'd really appreciate it if you'd let me know of any that I haven't listed.

3. ESpotting in The Sun
====================

Espotting has announced that it has signed an exclusive distribution deal with the The Sun newspaper. Espotting will provide its paid listings throughout The Sun's website.

Under the terms of the deal Espotting will provide 2 listings under the heading "Sponsored Links" throughout The Sun's news pages, as well as across all channels, including Sport, Entertainment, Movies, Life, and Bizarre.

Espotting's "Content Solutions" product places keyword-driven advertiser listings below and next to relevant content across The Sun's site. For example, Espotting's results for the keyword 'football ticket' may appear next to relevant football stories.
